Bricklayer
Sustrans’ Greener Greenways project is transforming 280km of traffic free greenways to help support both people and wildlife.
The disused station at West Derby has been overgrown for years, with all the historic features and stories buried beneath the bramble. Sustrans Wildlife Champion volunteers cleared scrub and uncovered the station platforms, waiting room foundations and the walls of the cuttings. In the process we found that the station has deteriorated and is in need of repairs to bring it back to its former glory.
The plan is to repair all the stone wall and replace the coping stones to make the platforms safe again. We would also like to clear out under the half span arch to the west of the bridge and seal up the entrance with the metal grill so that we can use it as a storage space for tools and materials. There are several crawl ways that could probably be bricked up as well.
Once this is done we could rebuild the old waiting room, resurface or lay paving on top of the platform, install benches and generally try to get the place looking a bit like it did back in 1879.
