Staying Safe

A guide for students under 18 years and vulnerable adults

You have a right to be safe whilst in college, on a work placement or in your place of work. You also have a responsibility not to harm other people. This tells you what you can do if you or someone else is being harmed.

How can I be harmed?

You might be suffering from some form of abuse if you are:

  • Being physically hurt or emotionally harmed
  • Being bullied or made to do something you don’t want to. This includes cyber bullying (see bullying section)
  • Being made to do sexual things you do not want to do.

What is bullying?

Bullying is behaviour that is usually repeated over time and that intentionally hurts another individual or group, physically or emotionally. One person or a group can bully others.

Bullying can also take place using social media such as Facebook and mobile phones. This is called Cyber Bullying.

So what can I do?

Talk to someone:

  • One of your tutors
  • A student counsellor: 0151 252 3777 // talktome@liv-coll.ac.uk
  • Ring the College Safeguarding team 0151 252 3733 (9am-5pm term time) or contact the Duty Manager at other times when College is open. The Duty Manager’s contact name and number is displayed in reception areas at the main centres
  • If you don’t think it is urgent, or if you’re worried about talking to someone over the phone, please email us at safeguarding@liv-coll.ac.uk. We will respond with 2 working days.
  • Contact a helpline (see useful contacts below).

Keep yourself safe online:

  • Don’t add people you don’t know to your online profile. Dangerous people set up false online profiles to trick you.
  • If your online contacts are being nasty or stirring up trouble, don’t reply – delete them.
  • Many social network websites have a ‘report it’ button so just report anyone who misuses the site.
