Closing date: 06/02/2019

Job Introduction

Do you care about what goes on around you, wish your community had a louder voice, and want to make a difference? The Community News Project needs you!

A partnership between Facebook, local news publishers and the National Council for the Training of Journalists has enabled Reach to offer 28 community reporter roles across the UK.

We are looking to hire two reporters to work from the Liverpool Echo newsroom on a two-year fixed term contract.

Previous journalism experience or education is not essential. We want people who care about their communities, and want to make a difference in local communities. We’re especially keen to hear from people who believe they can help make our newsrooms more representative of the communities they serve.

Key Responsibilities

You will receive industry-leading digital journalism training which they will then share into your newsrooms, as well as the gold-standard NCTJ journalism training to become a fully-trained journalist.

As a Community Reporter, your main role will be to engage with people in specific communities to curate, collate and create content relevant to them. You will take responsibility for developing relationships with new communities, focusing on a named community each quarter, generating stories which re-engage communities with your local news provider.

You will be publishing packages of content to a high standard, writing headlines and uploading words, pictures, video and audio that you have sourced. Providing insight to the wider newsroom about the issues and concerns of specific communities will be an important part of the role.

The Ideal Candidate

You do need to have at least 5 GCSEs with Maths and English at a C or above (or equivalent). We also welcome people who are doing a completely different job – and want to make a career change to become a journalist.

We are offering two routes into journalism as a result of this scheme. For applicants with no previous journalism experience or education, we are offering journalism apprenticeships, which combine intensive training with on-the-job experience in local communities.

Flexible arrangements will be considered for the right candidates.
