Plastering students were perfecting their skills recently, ready to meet with a leading judge of construction’s foremost national competition, which kicks off in Spring.

Five 16-18 year olds and six adults met with SkillBuild UK judge, Dave Kehoe (British Gypsum), who was on hand to offer practical advice and training tips in preparation for the upcoming event.  The students took part in hands-on demonstrations to present their talents to this seasoned assessor.

Dave is also involved in the selection and training of competitors for the annual WorldSkills competition, which brings together winners in different skill categories from around the world vying for a world-class title.

Tutor, Liam Buckley, said: “We are pushing harder than ever this year to promote SkillBuild/WorldSkills in plastering and construction. We have recognised the talents of several of our plastering students this year, who will showcase their skills at this event. Other students were also involved in additional training tasks, with the emphasis on inspiring and supporting their fellow competitors.”

This popular guest also joined more than thirty full time, level 2 plastering students for an afternoon workshop and classroom session, to offer expert tips and advice to the group.

British Gypsum has been a valued supporter of the college over the years, donating the materials students need to hone their skills and practice tricks of the trade.

The regional heats of SkillBuild 2017 kick off around the country in Northern Ireland on Friday 24 March.
